FAQs

Paediatric haemato-oncology is the medical specialty focused on diagnosing and treating blood disorders and cancers in children.

Common symptoms include fatigue, paleness, frequent infections, easy bruising, and prolonged bleeding from minor cuts.

Leukaemia is diagnosed through blood tests, bone marrow biopsy, and genetic testing to identify abnormal white blood cells and genetic mutations.

Treatments include chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation therapy, and, in some cases, bone marrow transplantation.

Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder causing abnormal red blood cells. Management includes pain relief, hydroxyurea, regular health monitoring, and sometimes blood transfusions.

Haemophilia is treated with clotting factor replacement therapy to prevent and control bleeding episodes, along with preventive measures to avoid injuries.

A bone marrow transplant involves replacing damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells after thorough pre-transplant evaluations and conditioning therapy.

Common side effects include nausea, hair loss, fatigue, increased risk of infections, and decreased appetite, which can be managed with supportive care.

Families can support their child by following medical advice, attending regular check-ups, providing emotional support, and maintaining a positive and hopeful environment.

Follow-up care includes regular monitoring for complications, infection prevention, nutritional support, and long-term follow-up to ensure continued health and recovery.
